Megan Whalen Turner was born in 1965 as the baby of the family. She grew up in Ohio and attended the University of Chicago where she graduated with her BA in English Literature in 1987. After graduation, she worked as a bookseller for 8 years. Turner married a Professor of Cognitive Science and has traveled across North America and over to Norway for his work.
While working as a bookseller, she wrote a collection of short stories, mostly because she didn't think she could write a full novel. Those stories were published into 1995's collection Instead of Three Wishes: Magical Short Stories. The following year, Turner published her first full-length novel, The Thief. The book went on to be a Newbery Award honouree in 1997. Since then, Turner has published three more novels that takes place in the same world at The Thief: The Queen of Attolia, The Kind of Attolia and A Conspiracy of Kings. Turner herself has no name for the series but fans call it The Queen's Thief series. She actually encourages reader to read the books out of order for another way of experiencing the book. She has also contributed to the 2003 short story collection Firebirds, and has written three short stories set in the same Queen's Thief universe: Thief!, Destruction, and Eddis.
Turner specifically states she does not put much information about her life on the internet and would be appreciative if readers would refrain from asking too much from her.
